Cygma announced the release of SmartSafe at a meeting in Cape Town on 1 August 2017. The SmartSafe Safety Management Program is the most cost effective solution in South Africa, strictly focusing on regulatory requirements under the OHSAct, the National Health Act and the National Road Traffic Act.
SmartSafe offers a very unique approach to managing SHEQ in the workplace. Employers will know how much H&S will cost them on an annual basis and can budget accordingly.
The foundation of SmartSafe is the OHSAct and the taylormade programs contains 12 modules, ranging from Organisational architecture to management review and employers gets audited once a month to keep up to date with progress.
SmartSafe is designed for employers with less than 20 employees and an annual cost saving of R200 000 is guaranteed with an entry level program starting at R1 750 per month.
OHS Legal requirements are not a matter of choice. It has to be complied with, just like paying income tax, but it does not have to be a time consuming cumbersome and over-the-top system of documents. SmartSafe is so easy to use, employers will have no excuse when the DOL visits.
A new Star-grading system is coming
SmartSafe’s grading system is based on compliance with minimum legal requirements. Employers who uses SmartSafe are graded every quarter and a Compliance Certificate is issued and updated monthly. Employers meeting the 65 objectives are guaranteed to obtain a 5-star rating.
Incident rate becoming irrelevant
SmartSafe differs from other grading systems in that it totally ignores the number of incidents that occurred because the DIFR has become outdated. Employers only need to do what is legally required to prevent accidents and will not be penalised should one occur. This is based on the idea that if incidents can be prevented, COID would not be required. COID however accepts that employees may get injured just like one can get injured in all spheres of life. Penalising an employer for an incident, despite every effort to prevent it, is just not sensible.
Many employers fail 100% to comply with the requirements, yet never had a COID claim. So how can this be a valid measurement of compliance?
Free GAP Analysis
SmartSafe offers employers a free analysis of their legal status in terms of the relevant laws. It is then up to the employer to decide and discuss the way forward.
SmartSafe creates consumer awareness and brand loyalty, with two Certification options. Employers can have either their products or services certified as being performed in compliance with relevant laws.
One of the key features of SmartSafe is an insurance clause against the proposed Administrative Penalties in the new OHS Act. In terms of this clause, Employers are protected against these fines by the DOL. The SmartSafe penalty free clause commences on the same date as the new OHS Act.
